Was lots of fun and exercise. In fact, it was my exercise well sort of. I would jog in the mornings in preparation for the Summer fire season. Wound up going on multiple structure and especially wildland fires. I personally preferred wildland because I didn’t have to go into burning houses, or mop up after a mobile home fire for about four hours. YUCK! Those things are a mess after a fire.
Went on a lot of strike teams during the Summer. I would carry around structure and wildland fire gear as well as my code five bag (clothes, food, etc. for about five days).
The neatest fire was with the Forest Service where I was flown by helicopter up into the high country for a wilderness fire. We’d camp on a granite bowl during the night and fight fire and mop up during the day.
I was hurt twice during those four and a half years but that was two times too many so after recovering from the last one I retired when I also changed jobs and moved from the state.
Check back from time to time for stories and pictures as I find the time to write, scan, and post!
